Successful completion of an aptitude test

Proficiency of English

Candidates applying for the aptitude test, who have neither a German general qualification for university entrance nor a degree / graduation in a German speaking course of studies have to prove sufficient knowledge of the German language (comparable with level DSH-2). Proof is to be submitted in form of a suitable certificate until the start of studies. The authorization to study expires if the certificate is not submitted in time.

Program objective

The degree program aims to familiarise students with historical as well as systematic Music Theory. It stresses the importance of reflecting on music-theoretical systems, professional execution of analytical processes and the instrumental realisation of their findings.

Employment opportunities for graduates predominantly present themselves in the fields of Music Pedagogy and Musicology.

The degree program includes constant analytical reflection and individual invention as well as studies in Historical and Systematic Musicology. With teaching of Music Theory playing a major part in future employment, the study schedule also encompasses courses with didactic-methodic focus. It furthermore contains modules concentrating on specific aspects of research and its implementation in the pedagogical practice. A steady dialogue is held with its neighbouring discipline Musicology.

Students continually expand their knowlegde of Musicology and Music Theory and apply it within analyses and compositions, partitioned into the following modules:

Requirements for the aptitude test

Major subject Music Theory Oral-practical test (approx. 30 minutes) including a pianistic performance of figured bass and aural analysis, as well as a written examination (120 minutes) with tasks from general theory of music, composition and aural training.
Artistic major subject (Voice or Piano)

Artistic-practical test (approx. 15 minutes) including performances of works from different periods resp. stylistics and sight-playing.

The artistic subjects allow to choose Jazz and Popular Music as focus.

Artistic minor subject (Voice or Piano)

Artistic-practical test (approx. 15 minutes) including performances of works from different periods resp. stylistics.
