The application process

Dear applicants, we strongly recommend that you read the information below before applying.

The following describes the application process for potential students who possess a qualification that entitles them to study at a German university, such as the 'Abitur'. Those who would like to study here and hold foreign qualifications entitling them to study at universities can find more information about the related procedures in the section 'International Applicants'.

Please note that you can apply only for one degree program at a time at the Mainz School of Music. For more extensive information about the individual degree courses, vocational opportunities, and course requirements, please see the section on 'Courses'. We will be happy to advise you in selecting a course of study. Contact information can be found in the column to the right.

Application process

The application process is similar to that for first semester students. Admission to the aptitude test is based upon the admission requirements for the respective degree program.

Applicants who have already begun or completed a degree program at another school of music or conservatory are subject to more stringent requirements in the aptitude test in their major or minor subjects, depending on the length of their prior education.

Acceptance of already acquired degrees and qualifications

Following a successful aptitude test, the process of acceptance of prior degrees and qualifications (placement in advanced semesters etc.) will be initiated by the Office for Degree Programs and Examination Affairs in consultation with the respective degree program directors. All documents required must be included as certified copies with the application to the School of Music.

If you have obtained your school leaving certificate or a study degree abroad, you will need a certificate of recognition of your foreign certificates and diplomas in order to apply for a course of study at the Johannes Gutenberg University (compare below "4. You apply to the university"). This applies to both foreign applicants and Germans.

You can find detailed information, possibilities of online application and all documents needed here: Applying with International Certificats.

Ausrufungszeichen rotThe application for recognition of foreign certificates can be filed at any time. The processing takes about 6 weeks, thus we advise you to take the application deadlines for the course of study into account and to submit the application early!
Please submit your application before February 10th (to begin your study in winter) or September 10th (to begin your study in summer)! A later application is possible - however, a timely processing before the application deadlines can no longer be guaranteed. An aptitude test is only possible with a valid or provisional certificate of recognition. This must be available with the application.

Submission of the registration form is a binding commitment to participate in the examination. Any applicant who fails to appear for the examination without providing adequate justification in document form (such as a medical certificate) will be judged to have failed the examination. Applicants who fail the exam are allowed to repeat the aptitude test once only.

Please pay attention to the application deadlines:

  • for entry beginning in a winter semester: April 1
  • for entry beginning in a summer semester: November 1

Ausrufungszeichen rotExtension of these deadlines is NOT possible. Several of our degree programs provide for admission in the winter semester only. More information on this can be found in the respective degree program information.

In addition to your application at the Mainz School of Music you have to apply for a place at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz via online application (the application forms are only available during the application periods).

Ausrufungszeichen rotAfter submitting the application electronically, the "Print" button in the application overview will generate a PDF document informing you whether and which further documents you need to submit for a successful application to JGU. Submit your application early so potential queries, missing documents etc. can be handled and submitted in time.
