Admission requirements

University entrance qualification as per Art. 33 and 65 (1-2) of the University Act (HochSchG): General higher education entrance qualification or a discipline-specific admission qualification

Successful completion of an aptitude test

A General Certificate of Secondary Education (f.i. Realschulabschluss) does qualify to enroll if a candidate has passed the aptitude test in the major subject organ with a score of at least “13” and has passed all the other parts of the aptitude test as well.

Candidates applying for the aptitude test, who have neither a German general qualification for university entrance nor a degree / graduation in a German speaking course of studies have to submit a certificate of German language skills for at least the level B2 (CER). The authorization expires if the certificate is not submitted in time.

Program objective

The Bachelor's degree program is a basic course of artistic study that leads to an academic qualification for a future career.

The goal is to provide individuals with sufficient artistic talent with the necessary artistic, educational, and other professionally significant core skills and competencies to enable them to work successfully as a professional church musician.

The participation in writing workshops by the university’s “Schreibwerkstatt” (Introduction in academic working methods) and in events by “Studium generale” is strongly recommended. A stay abroad is recommended after the 4th or 6th semester.

Requirements for the aptitude test

Organ major

Examination duration: approx. 15 minutes

• Presentation of four-part accompanying passage with intonations to church songs (with pedal) based on a single-voice pattern (unprepared); own prepared improvisational contributions are welcome to be presented
• Presentation of three studied organ compositions of moderate difficulty from different periods, including one by Johann Sebastian Bach
• Sight-playing

Piano minor

Examination duration: approx. 10 minutes

• Presentation of two works from different periods

Voice minor

Examination duration: approx. 10 minutes

• Presentation of two works from different periods

Ear training (written and oral)

Examination duration: 1 hour

• Musical dictation (single and dual-voice tonal and free tonal musical dictation as well as rhythm examples)
Examination duration: approx. 10 minutes

• Identification and singing of intervals and chords as well as rhythm and meters, repetition (instrumental or voice) and expansion of melodic phrases that are presented, accompaniment of a song melody, sight-singing of a moderately difficult choral part

General music and composition training (written)

Examination duration: 1 hour

• Composition tasks and questions about general music theory (identification and notation of intervals and chords, explanation of specialized musical terminology and forms, notation of a short figured bass, polyharmonic passage for a provided melody)
